: The Lord Jesus Christ Is the subject of the entire Bible. The uniqueness of the Lord Jesus Is celebrated all through the scripture and as seriously affected history. Thus, the subject of the virgin birth, the crucifixion, death, burial and bodily resurrection of Jesus Christ is of vital importance both to Christendom and entire humanity. For the purpose of this study we shall pick the subject one after the other and consider the significance.

The Virgin Birth

The Scripture teaches that Jesus Christ is the only begotten Son of God was miraculously conceived by the Virgin Mary. This was initially foretold in the Old Testament and became fulfilled in this New Testament. And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, between thy seed and HER SEED: It shall bruise thy head and thou shall bruise his heel. (Genesis 3:15). This is the first hint about the virgin birth of the Lord Jesus Christ. The Bible called him the SEED of the woman (not of man) In Isaiah the description is more graphic:

Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign: Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bare a son, and shall call his name Emmanuel. (Isaiah 7:14)

The Narrative in the gospel in Saint Luke points out that angel Gabriel was sent to a virgin. After the announcement, Mary herself asked the angel:

How shall this things be, seeing I know not a man (Luke 1:34)

The writer of Matthew’s gospel said

Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise when as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together she was found with child of the Holy Ghost (Matt. 1: 18)

Further record said Joseph knew her not till she as brought forth her first Son and he called his name Jesus. All the reference above point to the fact that Jesus was conceive by a woman who had never know a man. It further point that Jesus is not the SEED of man but of God. Looking closely at the scripture Jesus often referred to people as his mother, brothers and sisters but he never referred to any mortal man as his father not even Joseph.

Matt 12:49-50:22:41-46 John 8:54 The angel bore witness that what was conceived was of the Holy Ghost (Matt 1:20) The virgin birth of the Lord Jesus Christ is an established fact in the scripture.

The Significance

The virgin birth is a strong pointer of the Deitiship of the Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is the only man that was free from adamic depravity which makes him the only man that meet God’s requirement at Calvary. The virgin birth was a unique sign from God. The virgin birth distinguished the Lord Jesus from other mortal, as the only true messiah. The virgin birth is the most unique and unprecedented sign.

The Crucifixion Death, Burial and Bodily Resurrection

The Bible teaches that the Lord Jesus Christ was actually crucified, died and was buried and resurrected bodily on the third day.

For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures: and that he was buried and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures (1 cor.15:3-4)

The scripture had earlier testified to these events several years before it was actually fulfilled by the Lord Jesus Christ.

And after threescore and two weeks shall messiah be cut off…(Dan 9:26)

Awake, O sword against my shepherd and against the man that is my fellow said the Lord of host: smite the shepherd and the sheep shall be scattered (Zech 13:7)

1 Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed? 2 For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him. 3 He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

4 Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. 5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. 6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. 7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.

8 He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken. 9 And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth. 10 Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief:

when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand. 11 He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities. 12

Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors. Isaiah 53:1-12

The death of the Lords Jesus Christ was prophesied all through the Old Testament, right from the first prophecy in Genesis 3:15-16 from the mouth of God Himself .The uniform testimony of the New Testament was that He (The Lord Jesus) was crucified. The story is the same in all the gospels. Jesus Christ was actually nailed to the cross and remains there until he said his final word “It is finished and died. He was brought down completely dead! – Matt 27:32-50: mark 15:24-37: Luke 23:34-46 John 19:16-30.

The scripture also testified that he was buried in a sepulcher that had not been used before; John 19:38-42. The scripture testified that he died on a Friday and was buried the same day and he resurrected on a Sunday the first day of the week.

For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither will thou suffer thy Holy one to see corruption (Ps .16:10)

All the Gospels testified to the bodily resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ; Matt 28:1-10,Mark 16:1-18,Luke 24:1-9,John 20:1-31.

The Bible also testified that several other people saw the Lord Jesus Christ after resurrection

3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: 5 And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: 6 After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. 7 After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. 8 And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. 1 Cor 15:3-8

Evidence Of Christ’s Resurrection

  1. The rolling away of the stone that covered the mouth of the tomb
  2. The empty tomb
  3. The cloth used to wrap Him was seen alone on side
  4. He appeared to many people after His resurrection
  5. They saw Him in His bodily form not a spirit or a ghost
  6. He dined with Peter and others at the sea shore
  7. He ascended to heaven in His resurrected body

It is obvious from the scripture that the Lord Jesus Christ was crucified, died there on the cross, was buried and resurrected bodily on the third day. To deny this vital truth of the scripture is to deny the very essence of Christianity; and to be found to be an antichrist!

Significance

  1. The passion and death of Jesus Christ is for redemption of mankind.
  2. Jesus Christ tasted death for all humanity.
  3. By His stripes we are healed.
  4. The Demand of justice was satisfied by His death.
  5. Through Death he conquered the one that has the power of death i.e. the devil.
  6. He fulfilled the scriptures by His death.
  7. His resurrection is for our justification.
  8. His resurrection shows His Deitiship.
  9. The resurrection of Jesus Christ point to the resurrection to eternal life of all that believe in Him.
